You know we have to talk about this right?

I am a huge advocate for treating others the way you want to be treated.

Regardless of the age and status, everyone deserves to be respected.

Some days ago, a friend took to facebook to vent. A supposed responsible man standing in front of her at a cash machine queue allowed another lady join the queue without asking her if it was okay.

She kept quiet because he was older than her but other people stood up on her behalf and reprimanded him.

I could relate to that story because I have had similar experiences not once or twice. Honestly, i sometimes get tired of nicely calling people to order and just go from zero to hundred in seconds.

Isn’t respect supposed to start from ourselves?

Like knowing when to apologise?

Like knowing how to say please?

Like avoiding condescending statements when talking to others?

I will never understand how ‘being older’ means you must be respected.

Respect

Respect is essential to human life. It is one thing we can give freely without having too think hard.

But is it that easy? NO!

There will be people who have no inkling as to what respect truly means.

You will meet people who have no regard for others, who are uncouth and talk without caution.

You should never be that person and no one deserves to feel less human.

If we are going to achieve our goals successfully, we must be able to respect ourselves and also attach worth to others.

We should respect other people because we human and it reflects who we really are.

As adults, it is important to teach the younger ones to be respectful. If little kids are involved, then we have to be even more careful because they emulate easily.

In Nigeria, a disrespectful person is most likely to be told ‘you lack home training’. Disrespect is automatically tied to the person’s family even if he/she happens to be the only black sheep.

Working in a corporate environment has thought me a lot about self respect and respecting others.  I think it is a lot better to earn respect than enforce or instill fear in other people.

If you instill fear in others, they will feign respect in your presence but behind you, it’s a different ball game altogether (if you know what I mean).

The case is definitely different if you genuinely respect yourself and others.

The importance of self respect and respect for others cannot be over-emphasized.

  • When you respect others, the feeling will be mutual. You get genuine respect from others.
  • Respect for others is an opportunity for progress. You become highly recommended.
  • Respect for others gives you a good reputation. You are likeable and approachable.
  • Respect for others means maturity.
  • Respect for others says so much about your background.

I will not try to argue that some people get more respect than others.

I will just say make yourself worthy of respect and you will reap the benefits even in your absence.

Please share your thoughts about respect.

Do you find it easy to respect others?

Have you ever had to call anyone out for being disrespectful?

I will love to read from you.
