Self-Love
What does Self-love mean to you?
Personally, Self-love is basically guarding my heart and making sure my happiness is a priority. This does not mean I am less concerned about my partner, friends or families happiness. It simply means being at my best to ensure i am able to give my best.
I have heard people compare ‘self love’ to being selfish or conceited. Like every other issue we have had to deal with, self love cannot exactly be explained without its faults. This is as a result of conflicting individual opinions as to what self love is, how we handle self-love and how we others to understand our behaviour.
Too much of everything can be harmful and our intended act of self love can be misinterpreted by people around us. However, I strongly believe that we cannot give what we do not have and so it is important that we sometimes indulge. By this, I mean doing things that make you happy so that it rubs off naturally on those that we care about. If we try so hard to wear a happy face when we are really sad, there might be consequences too difficult to handle. There is also a tendency to rile bottled up emotions when we least expect.
What Self-love is:
It is necessary to ensure we are in a state of mind that allows us serve others effortlessly. Self love is basically having respect for your mind and body. Being in control of your mind and body permits you to see problems before they materialize, accept them and handle them before any damage is done.
Self love makes you conscious of your well being and also influences every decision you have to make. Self-love permits you to make conscious decisions and be responsible for your actions. Naturally, if an issue clashes with your spirituality, finance, emotions, body etc you make an effort to create a balance just because you have your happiness to look out for.
What Self-love is not:
Self love means different things to different people and so we have to find what works for us as individuals. Self love does not mean loving yourself more than those you care about, it does not mean buying the most expensive things as the latest item today becomes stale once there is a new trend. Self love has nothing to do with vanity or outward beauty.
It is a lifestyle that rubs off on decisions we have to make. Practising self-love is acknowledging that we deserve to be happy, we are resourceful and content with our being.
